Women in Seed Entrepreneurship (WISE)
Project Title : Women in Seed Entrepreneurship.
Project Duration : September 2012 to June 2013.
Funding Sources : IFC-SEDF/RDA-Bogra/Seed Wing-MoA, GoB.
The public sector seed system is able to meet only about 18% of the rice seed requirement, in the contrary farmer saved/farmer-traded seed continues to be the dominant sources of seed in Bangladesh. Women being the half of the total population, of which 80% live in rural Bangladesh, have been playing significant roles in various types of post-harvest activities like seed production and processing. The IRRI operated “ Poverty Elimination Through Rice Research Assistance (PETRRA)’’ Project in Bangladesh experienced that Women are important “ Change Agent’’ in rice post-harvest activities in marginal and small farms, which are about two-third of the farming community in Bangladesh. Keeping this in view the Rural Development Academy (RDA) in Bogra under an active collaboration with the Seed Wing-Ministry of Agriculture, GoB and IFC/SEDF initiated an action research based model- ‘‘ Women in Seed Entrepreneurship (WISE)” and tested this model in 2008 in one Upazila through one NGO. It was observed that the Women have demonstrated effective knowledge adoption, improved production practices and experiencing greater profit margin than before. Upon successful achievement of the tested model, the RDA-Bogra involved TMSS as local partner for wider scale-up of this model during the first and second cycle of the project which has been ended -up on 31st December 2011. IFC-SEDF has extended this project for a further period of 10 months starting from September 2012 to June 2013 and TMSS has been implementing this project as local partner of RDA-Bogra under third project cycle.
